The well known French label Balenciaga created the ultimate “ugly” shoe, the ugliest of all ugly shoes for Spring 2018. He presented them on the runway in Paris, as part of its Spring 2018 women’s Pre-A-Porter show a collaboration with none other than Crocs.
They are not just any Crocs, but a cartoonish 10 cm platform version of the famously ugly shoe encrusted with Balenciaga crystals and what looked like the kind of plastic fridge magnets sold in airports.
Backstage, Gavasalia explained how he found Crocs incredibly modern and he’d been drawn to them because of the technology used in their manufacture. “It’s a very innovative shoe. It’s light, it’s a one-piece foam mould and to me these kind of techniques and working with these kind of materials is very Balenciaga,” he said.
The Crocs have been many things – practical, comfy, unisex and unbreakable – but they’ve never been cool. And they won’t.
Seriously now, would you imagine yourself wearing this king of shoes on the streets?
